Post Match Analysis Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundows

Kaizer Chiefs 1 vs Mamelodi Sundows 2

This article focuses on post match analysis of Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelod Sundowns in the ABSA Premiership match.

Firstly, in the pre-match interview Pitso 'Jingles' Mosimane said that the game was not a title decider but rather a bragging rights game for the supporters. Little did he know that Mamelodi Sundowns fans are going to have the bragging rights. Overall, Kaizer Chiefs "Amakhosi" were unlucky to lose the game.

Formations of Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns

At the start of the game Chiefs were using 3-5-2 formation, with left and right wing back. While Sundowns used their normal 4-3-3 formation. In the first few minutes of the game Chiefs were disorganized and it was a battle to see what formation they were using. Second half, Chiefs changed to a 4-3-3, with Parker on the right wing after Ntiya-Ntiya found himself in good positions in the first half but failed to cross the ball into the box (.i.e. Position of Maximum Opportunity (POMO)) with his weaker left foot.

Post Match Analyses

Kaizer Chiefs defending in the first few minutes of the match was terrible. They conceded a goal from a simple 1-2 from a combination from Anthony Laffor and Serino. Walusimbi was ball watching and left Laffor to dribble Katsande and score the first goal of the game. This moment and another moment which Laffo failed to take advantage off led to the substitution of Walusimbi. Walusimbi, did not look like a player who deserves to play for a big team like Chiefs. He was replaced in the beginning of the second half by Teenage Hadebe. Fortunately, from a defensive blander by the New Zealander (.i.e. Brookie), Willard Katsande headed the ball into the net from a good free kick from Khama Billiat.

After conceding the goal Mamelodi Sundowns looked shaky at back especially from set pieces. Sundowns were not organised, and the marking of individual players especially Katsende was non existing and they left too much space in the goal areas unattended. Maybe they could have employed zonal marking to protect dangerous areas as well as man mark the danger players such as Katsande. However, Katsande could have had a second from a corner kick if he composed himself and used the correct technique. Sundowns conceded 5 corners and looked like leaking a goal from a set piece.Chiefs did not take advantage and after Katsande's injury in the second half Sundowns looked more likely to score. Kabelo Mahlasela was playing well but failed to score, after a beautiful 1-2 he decide to rather pass in a scoring position.

Bernard Parker missed two clear cut chances to give the Amakhosi the lead and the bragging rights after a dominant period from Amakhosi in the second half. Poor decision making plagued both teams as they both failed to test the keepers. A moment of indecision gifted Sundows their second goal and the winner. Virgil Vries, made a very bad mistake by miss judging the bounce of the ball, 9 minutes away from the final minute. He did not look as comfortable as Kune, the number one keeper of Kaizer Chiefs. In the 32nd minute in the first half after good pressing from Serino he was lucky not to lose the ball in his box which would have likely lead to Sundowns scoring.

Overall, the game was not up to high stands of the biggest teams in Africa. A couple of players, did not match up to the occasion from both sides. Anthony Laffor was named man of the match. Pitso coach of Sundowns performed a Clive Barker celebration when Sundowns scored the second goal to show how happy he was his team won the famous battle...
